Kathleen Hamann Quoted in Global Investigations Review: DOJ “Caught a Minnow” with ex-Goldman Sachs Banker’s Trial
In the trial of former Goldman Sacks banker Roger Ng, convicted for his role in the bribery and embezzlement scandal at Malaysia’s development fund 1MDB, the testimony of his former boss Tim Leissner “loomed large.”
In his testimony, Leissner, star witness for the Department of Justice, provided new details on how Ng spent some of the stolen money on “extravagant purchases” that can’t be resold or recovered. And while both Leissner and Ng await sentencing, it’s likely that Ng will face “harsher consequences for fighting his case,” even though Leissner was more senior at Goldman Sachs.
Pierce Atwood white-collar attorney Kathleen Hamann, a former prosecutor in DOJ’s FCPA unit, said, “The first cooperator in the door gets the best deal. Sometimes that means people get off lighter than they should.”
