Kathleen Hamann Quoted in Global Investigations Review: US Government Foregoes Reply to Russian Billionaire's Request for Supreme Court Review of Sanctions Designation
The US government declined to answer a petition by Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska for the Supreme Court to review his case, accusing the Department of the Treasury of “wrongfully sanctioning him for allegedly supporting his home country’s annexation of Crimea.”
Pierce Atwood litigation partner Kathleen Hamann stated, “Basically, what the government is saying is it's not even worth the Supreme Court's time for us to respond. I think there’s something particularly dissonant about the argument at the moment,” she added. “Since Deripaska first started fighting this, Russia invaded Ukraine.”
“United States Office of Foreign Assets (OFAC) was clear about the reasons [to sanction Deripaska], clear about its basis, and provided ample evidentiary support for them,” Hamann said. She added, “Why would the Supreme Court take this up given everything else that is in front of them?”
